Composition Chrysalis: A Creative Community

Have I talked enough about writing?

With the rise of AI and the quiet fading of simple craft, I’ve returned to the oldest art I know: writing.

If you know me, you know I journal until my wrist falls off. But journaling is private. Creative writing asks something different of you, to allow others to see you.

The mission for me was to begin, no matter how messy.

That intention led me to Composition Chrysalis, a local creative community.

A creative space for locals, created by a local. This space welcomes artists, poets, and lyricists of all levels.

I attended the Free Alchemy Workshop. I was greeted with a warm smile and long, gorgeous curls the moment I walked in. Natalie, the creator of Composition Chrysalis and a poet herself, welcomed us with genuine gratitude. She spoke passionately about the many creative events they host, and it was clear this space was built with care, intention and a deep respect for the creative process.

The events at Composition Chrysalis are designed to meet creatives at every stage:

Writer Write: Tarot x Writing Prompts

An online stream designed to spark inspiration and help you write from the comfort of your own home.

Feather Pen: Writer’s Circle

Guided prompts, time to write, and space to connect with other creatives.

Creative Current: Craft Night

Bring your own project or book and craft with your community. All creative mediums are welcome.

Writing Workshops

A chance to develop your writing with the encouragement and knowledge of other writers.

Punk Poetry / Open Mic

A low-pressure space to share your work or simply listen and be inspired by local artists.

During the workshop, Natalie introduced us to The Birth of Venus, the iconic painting by Sandro Botticelli. We were asked to write down a few words inspired by the image, then pass them to the person next to us.

I received the words majestic and divine.

We had fifteen minutes to write whatever came to mind. I stared at the small piece of paper, tracing each letter with my eyes, waiting for something to jump out. I wish I could say I opened my brain and ideas poured out like an abundant river of creativity. Instead I was met with thick, stagnant mud.

Stuck.

I instead found myself pondering the psychology behind intentionally throwing myself into uncomfortable situations. Why we crave expression even when we’re afraid of what might come out.

Natalie noticed. I didn’t even hear her approach. She crouched down and asked how it was going. I admitted how I felt. She smiled and reminded me that it didn’t have to be perfect. There were no rules, and I didn’t have to share anything I didn’t want to.

“Nothing has to be new or impressive. Write what’s on your mind. This is just another way you free your voice.”

I wish I could say her encouragement opened a gate to a garden where a beautiful poem bloomed.

It did not.

What Natalie did instead was something better.

She planted a seed.

Right there in the mud of my brain, she planted a simple permission I didn’t know I needed: free your voice.

No masterpiece was born that day, but a perspective shift was. Nothing has to be perfect to begin.

Spaces like Composition Chrysalis don’t exist to extract the best version of you. They exist to remind you that your voice is already enough, it just needs a little room to breathe.

Nurtured with a little encouragement, I’m excited to see what writers are born thanks to creative spaces like this.

If you’ve been creatively blocked or craving a place to explore your creativity without pressure, I highly recommend checking out any one of the events hosted by Composition Chrysalis.
