Where to Shop on Independent Bookstore Day in Lee County

Independent Bookstore Day is one of those celebrations that stays alive with the help of the community.

Every book you buy from an independent bookstore stays in the community, supporting a local owner, a local dream, and a local space that chose to exist because someone believed their neighborhood needed it.
Lee County has two worth knowing about. Both tucked away. Both are worth finding.

Flutterbuy Books & More | Cape Coral

Don’t let the outside fool you. Flutterbuy looks small from the street, but step through the door, and it’s a completely different story, stacked floor to ceiling with books organized by genre and alphabetically by author, with Finnegan the resident dog greeting you at the door.

This one is a book hunt in the best possible sense. Because they accept donations, the selection is always rotating and always surprising. Dig through the shelves, find something unexpected, and make your way to the back corner where a cozy puzzle nook is waiting, easily the best hidden gem within the hidden gem.

They also have a book credit system: donate or trade your books, and earn credit toward your next purchase. Bring your old books. Leave with new ones.

Blinking Owl Books | Fort Myers

Tucked inside the Yellow Bungalow on Colonial Boulevard is a bookstore that feels as if it were built with real intention.
Owner Lucy runs the whole thing, organizing, greeting, and checking out, and the care she puts in shows in every corner of the space. The book collection is inclusive and thoughtful, mixing used books with new releases and modern titles across a wide range of voices and perspectives. Beyond the shelves, you’ll find unique merch, witchy wares, modern tarot decks, teas, jewelry, and herbs from other local makers.

But what makes Blinking Owl truly special is its heart for community. A proudly queer, veteran, and women-owned independent bookstore, they have an events calendar full of open mic nights, book clubs, and writing workshops that are genuinely beginner-friendly. Small details like free period supplies in the bathrooms tell you everything you need to know about the care and intention poured into this store.
